On this day the Ashes were termed for the first time when Australia won against England for the first time in England. The match was hosted in The Oval ground where Australia set just 85 runs as the target, and England was 51 for 3 when WG Grace was out. Frederick Spofforth took 7 wickets to help Australia win against England. A day later Sporting times a British Newspaper said “the body will be cremated and the ashes will be taken to Australia” in a satirical way which gave birth to the Ashes series.
Frederick Spofforth took 14 wickets combining both the innings.
